Why Take Composition Lessons?

Develop Your Creativity

Every single one of us is capable of thoughtful creative expression. My goal as a composition teacher is to nurture each student’s individual creative voice in a way that support their future endeavors both in music and all other fields.

Learn Music Theory

Training as a composer is inherently tied to a knowledge of music and sound. As part of lessons I make sure to spend time on the fundamentals of music theory. Almost all great composers and songwriters throughout history have had a strong grasp of the fundamentals before breaking out of them. A strong foundation is essential for building confidence.

Find Your Voice

Whether a student intends to pursue a career as a professional composer or not finding their voice through writing music can help build confidence. Students will be able to take that confidence and apply it to making sure their voice is heard in situations outside of music as well.

Learn to Combine Multiple Disciplines

Writing music is an art form that combines creative expression with a mastery of technical skills. Oftentimes composers bring in elements of math, narrative analysis, and literary criticism into their work. While each composer’s approach to writing music is different the thing that remains universal is that music does not exist in isolation.
